April Book Club Pick: Why We Sleep

Thank you to those who were apart of our first Airway Book Club read of Breath by James Nestor. It sparked so many interesting reflections about breathing, jaw development, and daily awareness.

Our next book will be Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker,

beginning April 1st.

This book dives deep into the science of sleep and explains why sleep is one of the most powerful regulators of our health, influencing brain function, learning, immunity, mood, metabolism, and longevity.

For those of us interested in airway health, sleep is an incredibly important part of the conversation. The quality of our breathing during sleep can influence everything from energy levels and focus to growth and development in children.

Wrapping Up Breath!

As we begin to wrap up our first Airway Book Club book, I wanted to share one of my personal favourite chapters from Breath by James Nestor “Chew.”

This chapter ties so many of the book’s themes together in a really powerful way.

It explores how the modern shift to softer, processed foods has changed the way our jaws develop over time. Less chewing means less stimulation for the muscles and bones of the face, which can contribute to smaller jaws, crowded teeth, and less space for the tongue and airway.

For me, this chapter is especially meaningful because it highlights something I care deeply about in my work, how oral function and breathing are connected!

There’s even a small but exciting mention of Myofunctional Therapy, which focuses on supporting healthy habits like proper tongue posture, nasal breathing, chewing, and swallowing patterns. These foundational functions play a role in how our faces grow,…

3-Week Check-In: How’s Breath landing for you? 🫁

It’s been a few weeks since we began reading Breath by James Nestor, and I’d love to pause and check in!

I just had the cosiest reading weekend with the snow (& rain, unfortunately) :)

No pressure if you’re not “caught up.” You can respond whether you’ve read one chapter or the whole book.

A few ideas from the book that stood out for me!

• The experiment where participants had their noses blocked and were forced to mouth breathe , and how quickly their health markers changed!!!!

• The connection between breathing and sleep quality - can you relate??

Welcome to the Low Pressure – Funny Face Airway Book Club!! 🫁

Let me start with: I’m so glad you’re here. ❤️

This space was created to support curiosity, awareness, and understanding around airway health without overwhelm, deadlines, or expectations!

This is not a course.

This is not homework.

And it’s definitely not about doing things “perfectly.”

It’s a place to learn at your own pace, notice small patterns, ask questions, and feel supported along the way.

START HERE <3

Welcome 🤍If you’re wondering “Where do I begin?”  this post is for you.

There is no right pace for this book club. You do not need to read the entire book, take notes, or keep up with anyone else. Read what feels manageable, skip what doesn’t, and come back anytime!!!

If you’re opening Breath for the first time, consider starting with the early chapters that introduce:

  • Nasal vs mouth breathing

  • Why modern breathing habits have changed

  • How breathing affects sleep, energy, and daily function
