What to Expect in Your Sessions:
Initial Assessment:Your first session will involve a comprehensive assessment of your oral and facial muscles, breathing patterns, swallowing, and tongue posture. A full review of your medical, dental, birth, feeding and sleep hsistory. This will help me create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
Therapy Exercises: During each session, I will guide you through specific exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in proper breathing, chewing, swallowing, and tongue posture. These exercises are designed to be challenging but effective when practiced consistently.
Regular Monitoring and Progress Tracking: I will closely monitor your progress throughout your therapy. As you continue to improve, your exercises will be adjusted to ensure your muscles are being properly challenged. Exercises then focus on coordination for more complex skills in phase 2.
Home Practice: Myofunctional therapy is most effective when paired with consistent home practice. After each session, you’ll be given specific exercises to complete at home. The more dedicated you are to practicing these exercises, the better your results will be. If you put in the work, that quicker you can see results!
Tips for Success in Myofunctional Therapy:
Be Consistent: Success in myofunctional therapy requires consistent practice. Complete your exercises daily, as prescribed, to help retrain your muscles and create lasting improvements. I strongly recommend at least 2 times per day but if you have the time and motivation, 3x/day will have you on the right track for success!
Be Patient: Changes to muscle function and posture take time. While you may notice some improvement early on, full results may take several weeks or even months of consistent work.
Stay Focused on the Goal: It can be easy to get discouraged, but remember, myofunctional therapy addresses long-term habits. Your commitment will pay off with improved oral health, breathing, and overall quality of life.
Follow Your Plan: Stick to the customized plan given to you by your therapist. Avoid skipping exercises or changing the routine without consulting me first.
Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask questions during your sessions if you need clarification. I want you to feel empowered in your treatment process!
5 Signs You’re Ready to Commit to Myofunctional Therapy:
You Struggle with Mouth Breathing: Whether it's during sleep or throughout the day, consistent mouth breathing can lead to poor oral health, difficulty sleeping, and other health issues. Myofunctional therapy helps train you to breathe through your nose, promoting better airflow and overall health.
You Have Difficulty Swallowing or Chewing: If swallowing or chewing feels uncomfortable or inefficient, therapy can help retrain your muscles to perform these tasks more effectively.
You Have Poor Posture or Tension in Your Face, Jaw, or Neck: Poor muscle function in your oral and facial muscles can lead to tension, tightness, or misalignment in the jaw and neck. Myofunctional therapy strengthens and balances these muscles, improving posture and reducing discomfort.
You Have Trouble Sleeping (or Sleep Apnea): If you or your child struggle with sleep issues such as snoring or mild sleep apnea, myofunctional therapy can help address tongue and jaw posture, which plays a significant role in sleep quality.
You Want to Improve Overall Oral Function and Health: Whether you're looking to improve speech, avoid orthodontic relapse, or address any other oral concerns, myofunctional therapy can help support optimal oral function and health.
Thank you for choosing Funny Face OMT for your myofunctional therapy journey! I am committed to helping you achieve the best possible results and are excited to see your progress. I encourage you to communicate openly with me throughout your sessions and reach out if you have any questions.
I look forward to working with you and supporting your path to better health!
